When I moved four hours away from home to go to college, I didn’t realize just how often I would travel between Tallahassee and Orlando. More importantly, I didn’t realize how boring the drive would be. After exhausting my iTunes playlist with a quickness, I turned to podcasts to keep me entertained along the way. Some have come and gone, but I thought I’d share the others that have remained in my queue, entertaining me week after week.
SERIAL is an addictive podcast about a high school girl that went missing in Maryland in 1999, and was later found dead in a nearby park. Her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was convicted of her murder and sentenced to life prison. But did he really do it? There are so many holes in this case, and reporter Sarah Koenig has committed herself to resolving the questions left unanswered 15 years ago. Sounds like a great work of fiction, right? It’s all true, right down to Adnan’s telephone interviews from prison. New episodes are released every Thursday morning, and you can read more about the case and download the first episode here.
STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW is the perfect podcast for traveling with mixed company. The podcast is a spinoff of the website How Stuff Works, and features over 500 podcasts ranging from What is a Hangover, Really? to How do Patents Work? While some topics may seem dry, hosts Chuck and Josh make each podcast informative, interesting, and relevant. They cover the most random subjects like, Can You Die of a Broken Heart?, and Why Do Leaves Change Colors in the Fall? There’s truly something for everyone, and some of my favorites include, What’s Deal with Headstones?, How The Louvre Works, and How Ghost Prisons Work. You can browse the podcast archive and take a listen here.
ALISON ROSEN IS YOUR NEW BEST FRIEND is a podcast about nothing, really. But I mean that in a really good way. Alison Rosen, news anchor from the Adam Carrolla Show, interviews a comedian/celeb-type every Monday, and chats about randomness with her gang (Chris, Jenna, Matt, Gary, and Caelan) every Thursday. I’m partial to the Thursday podcasts, and one segment in particular called Just Me or Everyone? Listeners tweet Alison things like, “if I accidentally push the button on my garage remote, no matter how far away, I worry that the garage opened” and then the gang discusses in depth. Such topics have even inspired a post on this blog. You can have a listen here, if you like.
STUFF MOM NEVER TOLD YOU is also a spinoff from How Stuff Works, but with a feminine twist. Hosts Cristen and Caroline explore gender roles and, “get down to the the business of being women from every imaginable angle.” Traveling with a gal pal? Your mom? Your grandmother? With episodes like The Vegetarian Gender and The Notorious RBG (that’s Ruth Bader Ginsburg), you’re sure to be entertained, informed, and inspired to start a meaningful conversation about all sorts of lady topics. There’s even an episode dedicated to Golden Girls, so you really can’t go wrong. You can check out the podcast archives and have a listen here.
COMEDY BANG BANG is a show on IFC and an incredibly hilarious podcast. Host Scott Aukerman interviews comedians and their funniest characters, and with a roster including Nick Kroll, Amy Poehler, Nick Swardson, Sarah Silverman, and Bill Hader (not even scratching the surface, btw) you can’t help but laugh your face off. My absolute favorite episode features Nick Kroll and Jenny Slate and a bit about Pretty Liz (who reminds me of every girl I went to college with), and her PR firm, Pub-Liz-ity. You can check out the full podcast archive here.
Do you have a podcast that you just can’t miss? I’d love to know!
