What are you up to this weekend? Does it in involve football? I’m not invested in the big game, but I love a good half-time show, so I may tune in. I’m hoping to capitalize on my recent burst of energy by getting a whole slew of chores and to-do lists knocked out this weekend. I think the sunshine and crisp air have motivated me. Here are a few things that caught my eye this week…

We’ve all been there – standing in your closet gazing at your wardrobe options for the day and wishing that staring would magically produce more clothes to choose from. I find this part of my morning routine more common in the cooler months, when the goal is warmth and comfort. So, to make life easier, I’ve been wearing more monochromatic looks to work, including these black pieces. When wearing one color from head to toe, there are a few tips for keeping the look modern…
Now that I’m officially thirty, I’m making an effort to transform my beauty regimen. Gone are the days of endless tanning and minimal skincare routines. I’m starting from the ground up, beginning with improved skincare, facials on the reg, and quality makeup. Here is a list of some of the products I’m testing out right now.
one – james read sleep mask tan / two – wrinkies & frownies / three – james read tanning mitt / four – HUM nutrition arctic repair / five – ole henriksen lemon strip flash peel / six – dr. jart pore medic mist / seven – jurlique firming face oil / eight – clarins flash beauty balm / nine – smashbox photo finish foundation primer / ten – NARS blush in amour / eleven – lancome teint visionnaire foundation / twelve – clinique airbrush concealer / thirteen – nyx natural eye palette / fourteen – laura mercier translucent loose setting powder / fifteen – NARS satin lip pencil in rikugien / sixteen – marc jacobs highliner gel eye crayon in brown(out)
The last time I tried to make a smoothie, I ended up eating it with a spoon. My blender (which, btw, my mom bought me to make daiquiris on spring break 2005 – wootwoot) had officially bit the dust. So, for Christmas she upgraded my blender tenfold and ever since, I’ve been making this classic smoothie combo a few times a week…
travel size foundation brush // Since I’m overhauling everything in my arsenal, I want to try out all the options. I’m starting small by purchasing sample and travel sizes before committing to the investment of a full-size product. This foundation brush from Sephora is super soft and blends beautifully. Plus, the smaller size makes it easy to keep with me during the day.
NARS blush in amour // For a long time I had my heart set on this shade, which has received rave reviews as flattering on every skin tone, but when I saw all the pretty colors lined up in the store, amour proved complimentary to my coloring. I love the potency of this blush and that it lasts all day long.
Olay Total Effects moisturizer // I used to wear this moisturizer years ago and I don’t know why I ever strayed. After trying different brands, I found Olay Total Effects the most comfortable on my skin, which is either super dry or super oily. It keeps my skin balanced and adds a hint of color. It also smells amazing, which can make or break a beauty product for me.
Elizabeth and James Nirvana White // This perfume is light and sweet without being overbearing. I bought the rollerball because I like to control the amount of fragrance I wear at one time. This rollerball allows me to dab just a little on behind the ears before work so I’m not suffocating my co-workers. (There’s nothing worse than smelling like you’re still in the room 20 minutes after you’ve left). Plus, Nirvana Black is the brand’s musky counterpart, perfect for evening. The duo was designed to be layered to create a custom scent or worn alone, which I kind of love.
Happy Wednesday, all! I just have to share this podcast because it really spoke to me. Grace Bonney, creator of the amazingly popular blog, Design Sponge, hosts a weekly podcast called After the Jump. This installment discusses getting over fear, which I hate to admit is a major hurdle for me. Grace has a great way to deal though: talk it out. Talk out the worst possible scenario that could happen and you’ll find it’s probably not as bad as you thought. She speaks about her personal experiences with fear and more tips on defeating it. If you have some time, I highly recommend giving it a listen!
Now that I’ve taken more than enough time off for the holidays, I’m back with a brand new look. January is a time when most of us reflect on the year gone by and look forward to making changes and improvements in our lives. Whether it’s to eat healthier, organize that messy closet, or pursue a long-time passion, everyone has something they want to accomplish in the upcoming year. I’m amped up to improve my day-to-day routine (like a beauty regimen re-do) as well as work toward some of my long-term goals (like traveling further and more often). I’ve sworn off resolutions because I usually abandon them by March, but I feel ready to make little changes in every aspect of my life in order to ABI – always be improving.
As far as shiny|pretty|happy goes, I’m constantly trying to find a look that I’ll love for forever, and right now I’m digging this minimal layout. I think moving around the site will be easier, and post images are a little larger than before, which is awesome. The design is by Blogzilla, a company I’ve worked with before and love. I hope you like the re-vamp as much as I do, and stop by often. I’ve got some exciting things in the works for 2015!
Let’s do this!
